After getting his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil, he joined EMBRAER’s Engineering Specialization Program, and got a master’s degree in aeronautical and mechanical engineering from Aeronautics Institute of Technology. At EMBRAER, he worked as a loads engineer, developing flight simulation models used to calculate loads for structural analysis. He worked on many of the company’s projects, in commercial, business and military segments. He then joined Bombardier, in Canada, where he worked on different commercial and business jets, developing flight simulation models for the loads team. After taking a sabbatical to spend some time with family and focus on personal interests, he returned to work at Heart Aerospace, a Swedish startup that was developing an electric airplane, which soon became a hybrid-electric airplane. There he worked as a loads engineer and on the company’s test bench, integrating the flight simulator with real avionics, flight controls, and electric motors. To take part in the urban air mobility revolution, he moved to Japan and joined SkyDrive as a member of the simulation team, where he is responsible for developing simulation models and the flight simulator, which are used by the engineering teams to develop the aircraft in a safe and cost-effective environment.

From Traditional Aviation to eVTOL: R.S’ SkyDrive Journey to Building the UAM Future

Background:
R.S., a Brazilian engineer, always had a passion for aviation. After earning his master’s degree in aeronautical and mechanical engineering, he worked for several years at Embraer and Bombardier, leading aircraft manufacturers in Brazil and Canada, respectively. However, he soon realized that the traditional aviation industry was not moving fast enough towards sustainability and electric propulsion. Determined to make a difference, he worked at Heart Aerospace, a startup in Sweden developing a hybrid-electric airplane, before joining SkyDrive in Japan to pursue his dream of developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Role at SkyDrive:
SkyDrive’s success is largely due to its diverse and talented team. He brings extensive experience in aeronautical engineering and flight simulation to the table. He is a member of the simulation team, responsible for developing and supporting the development of simulation models and devices. Flight simulation is an essential tool in aircraft development, allowing the engineering teams and test pilots to safely design and test the aircraft.. Other key members include systems and software engineers, electric motors and battery specialists, and aerodynamic experts from around the world. Together, they have created a dynamic and collaborative work environment that fosters creativity and innovation.

Experience Working in Japan:
Despite SkyDrive’s progress, the eVTOL industry faces numerous challenges. One of the biggest obstacles is regulatory approval, as governments struggle to catch up with the rapidly evolving technology. Safety concerns and public acceptance are also significant issues that must be addressed. However, there are also enormous opportunities for growth and collaboration within the industry. As eVTOL technology advances, it has the potential to transform the way we travel, reduce traffic congestion, and increase accessibility for people with disabilities.

Goals and Future Plans:
He says that he looks forward to seeing the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft flying and made into production. He wants to see it proven to be safe, efficient, and a viable means of transport.

Personal Life:
Outside of work, he loves to run. When he cannot make it to the trails, he runs in the city. Thankfully, he is close enough to the main train station, from where he has easy access to nature to run on the country’s famous trails. His love of skiing got him to Hokkaido, where he said that despite being used to a similar weather in Canada, he had never seen as much powder snow.
